Blue Skills in Malta

Bridging the Skills Gap through Education and Ocean Literacy

12 May 2022 | Malta
Transport Malta Offices
Sa Maison House, Sa Maison, Malta

Through this hybrid event, co-organized with the Malta Maritime Forum, we will focus on bridging the gap between education providers and the maritime industry’s needs  with the help of public entities.

Raising awareness and attractiveness amongst the general public regarding  the many maritime job opportunities,  will also be addressed during this day with highly rated experts

Language: English

Skill shortage in the Maltese islands is a challenge faced by numerous maritime industry operators, reflecting amongst others, the lack of investment in maritime education and training, and the lack of awareness by the general public on the job opportunities offered by the maritime industry.

Given the strategic and economic importance of the maritime industry to Malta, the availability of blue skills in the labour market is a key element to securing the growth of the economic contribution of the sector in the years to come.

Indeed, the maritime sector offers a wide range of employment opportunities spread over various activities, requiring diverse skills, knowledge and expertise.

Digitalisation, automation and technological advancements also require a new set of skills and qualifications, which offer a variety of opportunities for jobs in research, innovation and development aspects of the field.

A seminar organised by the Maltese National Hub for the WestMED Initiative aims to create an opportunity for key stakeholders in the Maltese blue economy to come together to identify the skills gap between the education offer and labour market needs and explore the strengths and available opportunities to bridge this gap.

Education providers together with industry operators and public entities are therefore invited to attend this event to share their views towards finding solutions to this challenge. The seminar will be looking at the blue skills most pressing needs in the country from a holistic perspective, with a special focus put on a number of key priority sectors.

NGOs also play an important role in this, particularly in increasing ocean literacy across citizens by raising awareness on current environmental challenges. Thus, this seminar will also serve as an opportunity to explore the importance of increasing citizen engagement and addressing the existing gap in ocean knowledge to increase the attractiveness of blue careers.
