Scope

External borders of the European Union and of the Schengen area, ranging from those closer to the Mediterranean to the Nordic Countries external land borders, present different border surveillance challenges. These differences may lead to difficulties in efficiently monitoring them, deterring illegal activities across the external borders, as well as trafficking of human beings and exploitation of irregular migration that avoid border crossing points.

Outcomes

  • Increased border surveillance capabilities, better performing and more cost-efficient, with data and fundamental rights protection by design;
  • Better surveillance of border areas, supporting fight against illegal activities across external borders, as well as safety of people and operators in the border areas, including favouring border crossings through border crossing points;
  • More efficient and more flexible solutions (including for relocation, reconfiguration and rapid deployment capabilities) than physical barriers to deter and monitor irregular border crossings outside border crossing points

Scope

The scope of this topic is not only to develop new robotic solutions for specific tasks but addresses also more holistically the surrounding environment and factors that impact civil protection on a larger scale.

Outcomes

  • Broad acceptance of autonomous systems by first responders and affected people in civil protection;
  • Higher safety and security standards for operational forces working in hazardous environments;
  • Get ahead of future shortcomings of trained first responder personnel by increasing first responder efficiency (less personnel do more work in shorter time);
  • Increased ability to conduct on-scene operations remotely without endangering first responders;
  • European robotics industry is strengthened through engagement in the civil protection research as well as an economic and political advantage through building up know-how for innovative technologies;
  • Reduction of false positive readouts from various sensors carried by robots.

Scope:

The BPF is initiated and financed by the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGD) to stimulate private sector involvement in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals  in developing countries.

The BPF supports viable, entrepreneurial business initiatives with a strong social impact.

Each applicant is preferably a partnership that brings together actors from the private sector, civil society, academia and/or the public sector. The partnership consists of a minimum of one business partner.


In this call, priority will be given to projects around three themes:

  • Climate, environment and biodiversity
  • Gender and female entrepreneurship
  • Decent work and social protection

MedPAN Call for Small Projects to strengthen the level of effective protection in Mediterranean MPAs | Deadline: 5 February 2023

Scope:

MedPAN is launching a Call for Small Projects to support the actions led in Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in the Mediterranean. This Call aims to strengthen the level of effective protection in Mediterranean MPAs.

The MedPAN Call for Small Projects is open to:

  • Organisations in charge of the management of Mediterranean MPAs;
  • Other organisations (NGOs, private companies, scientific institutions, etc.) working with authorities that are in charge of the management of Mediterranean MPAs.

The MPA management authorities and the organisations who wish to participate will need to send the Grant Application Form to the MedPAN Secretariat by February 5, 2023 at the latest.
You will find all the details regarding participation eligibility, the type of projects targeted and the selection process in the Rules document of the Call for Small Projects.

Mediterranean sea basin lighthouse – Actions to prevent, minimise and remediate chemical pollution | deadline 27 September 2022

Objective

In line with the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan for Air, Water and Soil, proposals should demonstrate scalable breakthrough innovations (technological, business, social and governance) to prevent and minimize marine and freshwater pollution from chemical pollutants. Following the zero pollution hierarchy, proposals should focus on demonstrating replicable solutions to prevent and minimise pollution in the Mediterranean Sea including its major river catchment areas and taking into consideration land-sea interactions through measures, such as:

  • Upstream prevention of pollution from chemicals;
  • Substitutes or alternative less polluting substances and materials for the most prevalent chemical pollutants found in freshwater and at sea.

Proposed solutions for pollution prevention, elimination and remediation should not increase the level of anthropogenic underwater noise and air emissions.

Proposed solutions should be in line with the EU taxonomy regulation and delegated acts.

Proposals must:

  • Carry out demonstration activities in 3 different Member States and/or Associated Countries of the Mediterranean sea basin, involving and including in the consortium entities from these three countries;
  • Identify areas and locations where the solutions are replicable and draw up an action plan and roadmap to replicate and scale up the pollution solutions and actions.

The UNDP Ocean Innovation Challenge is looking for innovative solutions promoting sustainable fisheries to receive support up to 250K USD. Application deadline: 9 May 2021.

Over the years, the international community has taken important steps to promote sustainable fishing, such as the FAO’s Code of Conduct on Responsible Fishing, the 1995 UN Fish Stocks Agreement, and through the work of various regional fisheries agreements and RFMOs. Nevertheless, progress on key SDG 14 targets pertaining to sustainable fisheries has lagged and the main target, 14.4, was clearly not met in 2020.

Recognizing the increasing urgency of addressing unsustainable fishing, the second OIC Challenge, launched in March 2021, seeks innovative solutions that address one or more of the following SDG 14 targets:

  • 14.4 By 2020, end overfishing, IUU fishing and destructive fishing practices
  • 14.7 By 2030, increase the economic benefits to SIDS and LDCs from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries (and) aquaculture
  • 14.b Provide access for small scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets

Project proponents can include governments, private companies (including start-ups), NGO/CSO, United Nations entities, academic institutions, and intergovernmental organizations.

Call for ideas | Detection and Tracking Marine Pollution and Litter

The van Allen Foundation launched a new Call for innovative ideas for the detection and monitoring of marine litter in the western Mediterranean

The van Allen Foundation, a partnership foundation of the University of Montpellier, and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, invite public and private organizations to propose ideas and suggestions aimed at addressing the issue of detection and tracking marine pollution and litter in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea.

Although the emphasis is on the contribution of space techniques, the call for ideas is thus open to studies of numerical simulation, physics of measurement, measurements in the laboratory or at sea, and the application of artificial intelligence for the recognition of polluted pixels, or the carrying of sensors of opportunity, etc.

The Call for ideas is addressed to scientists and engineers, as well as to students, working in public or private laboratories or entities in France and worldwide.

Applications must reach the Van Allen Foundation Secretariat before April 30, 2021.
