New EMFAF Regional flagship projects just kicked off their work!

The EMFAF Regional flagships call, with a budget of EUR 7.6 million, focused on EU sea basins cooperation; in particular the Atlantic, the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea Region and the EU Outermost Regions. Ten new projects just kicked off.

Four projects are related to the Mediterranean: Green Marine Med, POWER4MED, CALLMEBLUE and the GreenMED. The first three projects received active assistance from the WestMED Assistance Mechanism in the application process.

GREEN MARINE MED  – Mediterranean Green Shipping Network: Linking Ports, Industries, Investment and Innovation for Monitoring and Technology Foresight on Green Shipping in the Mediterranean

GREEN MARINE MED will bring together, engage and mobilise the comprehensive Mediterranean Green Shipping stakeholder community, representing the full value chain including actors from the full vessel community, ports and marinas, fuel and energy, as well as finance, investment, innovation and other stakeholders. The comprehensive Network will create the foundation to enable the most broadly supported and useful Monitoring and Technology Foresight on Mediterranean Green Shipping.

Duration: 24 months – EU contribution: EUR 932 469.91

 

GreenMED – Green Shipping Pathways Towards a Clean Energy Transition in the Mediterranean

GreenMED is a regionally oriented project aiming to effectively support green shipping efforts in the Mediterranean Sea basin, by promoting plausible scenario-based decarbonisation pathways. The GreenMED’s ambition is to contribute directly and actively to the emission targets established by the EU under the 2030 and 2050 milestones. This goal´s realization relies on the comprehension and integration of innovative technologies, taking into consideration the regional ship energy demands, the fuel supply chains in both shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and the variety of emerging green shipping technologies, leading to the establishment of a decarbonisation hub: the Mediterranean Sustainable Shipping Observatory (MSSO).

POWER4MED – local emPOWERment of fuel transition FOR a green MEDiterranean

Transition toward carbon neutrality in maritime transport requires short & medium-term solutions, the former based on transition fuels (LNG), the latter on not yet fully available alternative fuels (green hydrogen, methanol, electricity & wind). Dealing with such complexity is difficult for the operators of smaller ships and POWER4MED has the ambition to support them by developing the POWER4MED Supporting Structure, a “Supporting Team” of multidisciplinary experts and a set of toolkits facilitating the path toward carbon neutrality of the 3 sectors targeted by the project: fishing boats, commercial vessels and marinas.

CALLMEBLUE  – Cluster ALLiance MEd BLUE

CALLMEBLUE aims to strengthen existing maritime clusters alliances in the Mediterranean area in order to accelerate north-south regional cooperation processes towards the emerging of strategic maritime clusters in North Africa area (south-south cooperation). The project will aim to create a strategic vision and transferable models of interregional cooperation, by implementing concrete actions at both local and regional level in order to raise awareness on the relevance of Maritime clusters as key actors for sustainable blue economy policies such as promoting exchange of best practices and knowledge transfer between north and southern area.

Duration: 24 months – EU contribution: EUR 780 987.86

Joint Italian-Maltese WestMED national event in Catania boosts blue opportunities in the Mediterranean

For the first time since the launch of the WestMED Initiative and the set-up of the Westmed Technical Assistance Mechanism, a joint national event was coordinated by the Italian and Maltese National Hubs, in Catania on Oct 4-6 2023.

Substantial support
This event was also made possible through the support by the respective National Coordinators, the decisive contribution of the Region Sicily-Dept of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishery, the Italian national clusters Federazione del Mare and CTN BIG.

With Malta and Italy both centrally located in the Mediterranean, these countries play a pivotal role in strengthening exchanges as well as synergies across the seabasin, particularly towards the Southern Shore countries.

Therefore Sicily, home of the Managing Authority of INTERREG Italy-Malta and INTERREG NEXT Italie-Tunisie, and Catania in particular (with its rich ecosystem of high tech companies, university and research centers) was  the natural place to exploit the potential of a North-South event with representatives attending from Italy, Malta, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia.

The event took place at Istituto Nazionale Fisica Nucleare – Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, which is a branch of the largest Italian research institution, located in Catania. The Institute has sought to valorise the opportunity offered by the WestMED in terms of networking and hosted the event on its premises. The Institute, strongly reaffirms the importance of internationalization and networking, with the national director general and INFN-LNS’s warmly welcoming all participants to the event.

The event also served to highlight the deep-sea research project currently being undertaken by the Institute (KM3NeT) and the application of this research to maritime fields. Participants also benefited from a guided tour of the INFN-LNS premises and visitor center.

Thematic sessions
Apart from the Opening Session on the 4th October, which was reserved for institutions and speakers, the following days of the event were dedicated to thematic sessions, building upon the outcomes of the technical and working groups of the WestMED, as well as the rising challenges experiences in this area of the Mediterranean. These thematic areas focused on:

  • Network of Ports and Infrastructures
  • Marine Renewables and Desalination,
  • Sustainable Fishery and related Biotech Supply Chains,
  • Oceanography-Geology-Marine Biology and Ecology
  • 2023 edition of MEDBLEUE was also discussed which included participation by CTN BIG, Maritime Tunisien and the Malta Maritime Forum.

Furthermore, the availability of EU funds, particularly the INTERREG ones, were discussed, with the Managing Authorities of Italy, Malta and Tunisia present. Presentations were delivered on the respective programmes from the Managing Authorities of EU Funding Programmes and from the Italian Agency for Cooperation Development AICS.

Many project ideas
The event also gave the opportunity to experienced entrepreneurs and researchers to present their project ideas to potential project partners.

Worth noting is the identification of project ideas stemming from Transport Malta, Port Authority of Northern Tyrrenean, INSTM Tunisia, Mauritanian Marine Cluster, SWAP-TOX project, DuWo srl and Le Vie dei Tesori, Signo Motus who are actively seeking partners and funding opportunities for their project proposals.

Forty participants took part in-person on October 4,  50 on October 5 and  30 on October 6. Between 15 to 30 participants joined remotely online each day.

Finally, the event marked the interest of INFN-LNS to join WestMED activities with the support of the WestMED’s Italian National Hub.

National event Tunisia with Salem Miladi on stage

Evénement national WestMED Tunisie 2023 : l’accent mis sur la formation à l’économie bleue

L’événement national WestMED sur l’économie bleue en Tunisie 2023, a eu lieu dans le bâtiment de la municipalité de Sfax (la deuxième plus grande ville du pays), le 29 septembre 2023.

Cet événement a été organisé en partenariat avec l’Université et la Municipalité de cette ville et a été ouverte par la Ministre chargée du Secrétariat Général des Affaires Maritimes, du Premier Responsable de la Municipalisé et du Vice-Président de l’Université de Sfax

Une cinquantaine de personnes se sont réunies, représentant les différentes activités de la mer bleue, des responsables régionaux, des universitaires et la société civile. Ils ont largement parlé de l’écotourisme marin en Tunisie et ont discuté de l’impact du développement des activités d’eau bleue sur l’environnement.

Les communications ont concernés quelques activités bleues et se sont axées principalement sur la formation dans le domaine de l’économie bleue en Tunisie et Salem Miladi (e Hub National WestMED Tunisie) a énuméré les besoins de formation dans les treize activités de l’économie bleue en distinguant les écarts entre les secteurs classiques et les secteurs prometteurs (Biotechnologies Bleues, Energies Marines Renouvelables, Désalinisation, Plaisance, Sports et Loisirs Nautiques) qui sont demandeurs d’emploi qualifié.

M. Miladi a proposé des réformes profondes au niveau de l’enseignement supérieur et de la formation professionnelle pour développer ces secteurs prometteurs et réduire les problèmes du chômage des diplômés du supérieur en Tunisie. L’économie bleue pourrait être une opportunité pour la Tunisie pour corriger son modèle de développent vers ces secteurs prometteurs.

La deuxième partie de la journée était consacrée au travail dans six groupes relatifs à la pêche, aux biotechnologies marines, à la valorisation des produits de la mer, à l’aquaculture, au tourisme et à la désalinisation de l’eau de mer. Des étudiants de l’Université de Sfax ont participé aussi à ces groupes. Les recommandations peuvent se résumer comme suit :

  • Développer ces secteurs et de créer de nouvelles opportunités de travail.
  • Promouvoir la pêche en préservant cette activité contre toute pratique illicite et en pratiquant les moyens modernes pour augmenter la production.
  • Créer des institutions spécialisées dans le domaine des biotechnologies marines en créant des mécanismes d’encouragement à créer des projets dans ce domaine notamment pour les jeunes.
  • Valoriser les produits de la mer notamment ceux destinés à l’exportation pour capter une valeur ajoutée locale plus importante.
  • Promouvoir l’aquaculture en variant plus cette activité par l’élevage d’autres espèces et en utilisant les techniques les plus modernes pour optimiser la nourriture et diminuer les déchets afin de préserver l’environnement
  • Varier le produit touristique tunisien et opter pour un tourisme durable et encourager le pescatourisme.
  • Développer la désalinisation de l’eau de mer pour réduire les effets du manque d’eau et des changements climatiques tout en évitant l’impact de l’accumulation du sel.
  • Réduire les effets négatifs de ces activités sur l’environnement et se doter des moyens les plus récents et les plus modernes pour cet objectif.
  • Vulgariser la notion d’économie bleue et la protection de l’environnement notamment au niveau des enfants et des jeunes.

WestMED National Hub Tunisie partage ses connaissances au Forum Mondial de la Mer 2023 à Bizerte

« Le Hub National Tunisie (Salem MILADI) a assisté vendredi 22 septembre 2023 au Forum Mondial de la Mer à Bizerte consacré à l’Océan et la Méditerranée : à l’air de l’ébullition.

Cette édition intervient après l’épisode caniculaire dramatique de l’été 2023 et la déclaration du Secrétaire Général des Nations Unies qui a récemment sonné l’alarme sur ce que nous pouvons qualifier d’ère de l’ébullition climatique.

Plus de quarante experts ont intervenu sur ce phénomène alarmant qui nécessite une attention immédiate et des actions concrètes. Leurs communications étaient axées sur quelles sont nos aspirations pour l’Océan en 2050 et comment la Méditerranée évoluera-t-elle dans les décennies à venir et quelles sont les mesures qui doivent être prises pour la protéger. Dans dans son intervention, le HN Tunisie a rappelé que la Méditerranée est une mer quasi fermée qui représente moins de 1% de l’Océan et elle est bordée par 21 pays qui compte 400 millions d’habitants et abrite une grande diversité biologique.

Toutefois, cette mer subit une pression qui est en augmentation par la surexploitation des ressources marines, l’accroissement des pollutions relatives aux particules fines dégagées par les navires, aux eaux usées urbaines, aux rejets industriels, aux déchets plastiques , aux pesticides et aux impacts des changements climatiques et le manque d’eau potable.

Le Hub National a rappelé le rôle du projet Westmed, qui regroupe dix pays de la méditerranée occidentale, à promouvoir une croissance bleue durable et ce dans le cadre de six groupes consacrés :

  1. Au transport maritime vert avec la substitution du fioul lourd par une énergie propre.
  2. A une pêche et aquaculture durables en proposant la lutte contre la pêche illicite et la maitrise et l’utilisation des smart technologies dans les différents maillons de la production aquacole pour lutter contre les déchets notamment de la nourriture.
  3. A la création de clusters maritimes notamment dans les pays de la rive sud.
  4. A l’élaborant un MSP pour chaque pays pour éviter un développement spontané des activités maritimes difficilement gérable.
  5. Au développement d’un tourisme durable garantissant une gestion durable de l’eau et de l’assainissement et encourageant l’utilisation des énergies renouvelables et les infrastructures durables et innovantes et enfin :
  6. A la promotion de la formation pour subvenir aux besoins en main d’œuvre pour les secteurs bleus prometteurs

Le Hub National a conclu son intervention par un appel à sauver la Méditerranée par l’engagement des pays à l’élaboration d’un plan d’actions détaillé et programmé dans le temps.

Maritime Clusters workshop at SeaFuture 2023 with speakers at table in a conference room

WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance presenting major achievements and developments at SeaFuture 2023

With the support of the WestMED (WM) Assistance Mechanism and the Italian national clusters CTN BIG and Federazione del Mare, the Maritime Clusters Alliance organised an event during SeaFuture 2023 in LaSpezia Italy focused on the WestMED Maritime Cluster Alliance

The main objective was to provide an overview of the cooperation among maritime clusters that are part of the WestMed Maritime Cluster Alliance (WM MCA) after two years since its inception- including:

  • jointly created, submitted and awarded projects requesting funding;
  • the significant impact on the southern shore dynamics (thanks to the proactivity of the Cluster Maritime Tunisien and the establishment of the Mauritanian Marine and Maritime Cluster);
  • the intensified Italian-Portuguese cooperation;
  • the inclusive approach of CTN BIG and Federazione del Mare towards the Mediterranean ecosystem as a whole.

Daniele Bosio and Luca Palazzo, WestMED National coordinators for Italy highlighted the importance of the Maritime Clusters Alliance Alliance towards the creation of a real Mediterranean ecosystem, particularly for a country like Italy that is currently preparating its first national strategic “Piano del Mare” (Plan for the Sea), as the main action after the establishment of the newly formed  ‘Ministry of the Sea and Civil Protection.’This Ministry is going to coordinate the competencies thgat is currently spread over 13 ministries.

Also, the inclusive role of Italy during its WestMED co-presidency was underlined, particularly for its embedding effort, to let regional and INTERREG managing authorities adopt WestMED priorities in the new 2021-2027 programmes and workplans.

Manuel Pleguezuelo (EC-DG MARE) reminded the priority given by DG MARE to the Maritime Cluster Alliance, considering the already achieved results, highlighting the work of the dedicated WestMED Workgroup and the role to include the outcomes within the recent EMFAF call that expired in late January 2023.

Adriana Salazar Olivan presented the role of the Union for the Mediterranean role in support of the WestMED Initiative, putting in evidence the impact that theresults achieved are having on the broader scenario of the whole Basin. This is witnessed by the involvement of Turkish, Greek, Egyptian, Jordan, Croatian etc organizations within the partnerships supported by the WMAM.
This has confirmed the validity of the Assistance Mechanism concept, as a “bottom-up” team, supporting and staying beside stakeholders instead of above.

Shaun Patrick Ebejer (Malta) confirmed the importance that the Maltese co-presidency is giving to the topic of clusters, also for the benefit of its small but vital ecosystem. Not for a case, the interaction with the Italian clusters is growing and the two countries are possibly joining forces for a common national event in October.

Main Achievements of the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance and its members
Among the multiple achievements of the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance, Anja Detant remarked the attention that the European Commission and CINEA paid to the opening the EMFAF calls to third countries, particularly those of the WestMED sub-basin, and to the priorities of the WestMED Technical Groups and Work Groups.

Hamadi BABA HAMADI, summarized the process and the importance for his country towards such a move, as a starting point to fully integrate Mauritania in the common ecosystem and tighten cooperation with northern and southern WM countries. The centrality of the Fishery sector, of Maritime Transport and of Blue Skills are indicated as priority for Mauritanian dynamics and networking activities with the Mediterranean stakeholders.

On June 9th in Rome, the president of the Mauritanian Marine and Maritime Cluster has signed an MoU with the Italian national clusters, aiming at a closer cooperation, including the research activities.

Emna Sohlobji, in her position of secretary general of the CMT (but also as elected Leading Woman in African Blue Economy) has witnessed the boost that her cluster gained in EU funded projects, but also in the capacity to provide internationalization opportunities to their associated members, for the benefit of the national Blue Economy. A bright example was illustrated as the MEBLEUE 2022 speeded up this process, with the concrete cooperation cases fostered among training institutes, research institutes, ports etc.

Ruben Eiras, secretary general of Forum Oceano and National Hub for Portugal, presented the Hub Azul Dealroom (a comprehensive digital stakeholders’ platform), a service that is part of the larger Portuguese strategy for the Blue Economy and the need to enable a faster matchmaking between innovators, policy makers, promoters and investors. The Dealroom is a tool at disposal of the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance, to enlarge networks and foster new knowledge and partnerships.

Laurence Martin and Thanos Smanis, presented the European Blue Forum that was launched during the recent European Maritime Day in Brest, and the key role that maritime clusters will be playing there too.

ForMare, Forum Oceano, CTN BIG, Strategis Cluster, SGD4MED, Federazione del Mare, Pole Mediterranée described concrete project proposals  that have been supported by the WestMED Assistance Mechanism to apply for funding – also with the perspective of possible capitalization actions. Most of these proposals were approved: ERASMUS+ – MARMED and MAQUAM, COSME Euroclusters – MedBan, IKAT and ELBE Alliance, EMFAF Women in Blue Economy – WINBIG, EMFAF Maritime Clusters CALLMEBLUE and Green Marine MED, EMFAF Ports & Maritime Transport POWER4MED.

 

Established cooperation agreements and synergies

Antonio Novo Guerrero, founder and president of the European Clusters Alliance (ECA), and Axelle Salvage fromEuropean Network of Maritime Clusters (ENMC) explained the efforts undertaken by the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance in liaising with their leading aggregations of clusters

The fruitful exchanges with ECA are now aimed at integrating networking agendas reciprocally, enlarging cross-sectoral exchange opportunities for WM MCA members and open the Blue specialization to the ECA. ENMC at their end, recognises the importance of the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliamce as a way to gain more direct access to and interact with a broader spectrum of maritime clusters within the Mediterranean region, and its Assistance Mechanism.

Finally Walter Wassallo, promoter of the Blue Marina Award (that recognises Italian marinas for their coherence with sustainable Development Goals-SDG’s), presented the second edition of the awards to be held in Trieste in 2023 and is already looking at its cross-border Mediterranean scope from 2024 on, thanks to the technical assistance of the Italian National Hub in close cooperation with National Hub colleagues from the WestMED countries.

Conclusions
Conclusions were then summarized by the intervention of Giovanni Caprino, President of CTN BIG, and the remote intervention of Matteo Bocci, who coordinates the WestMED Maritime Clusters Alliance together with WestMED’s Italian National Hub.

Along these conclusions also the opportunities represented to increase exchanges with Black Sea and Atlantic Sea Basins’ stakeholders were underline, as a further contribution to the internationalization strategies and synergies of the“WestMED Maritime Clusters Community”.

On 12 May 2023,  Salem Miladi, WestMED National Hub Tunisia, was invited as an expert to participate in a 1:45hr nationally televised debate on the Blue Economy by the Tunisian commercial television station ‘Tunisna TV’ . It was an episode of the program ‘L’expert’ that was presented by Abdellatif Ben Hedia.

Next to Mr Miladi, the panel consisted of:

  • Neji Jalloul : former Minister of National Education
  • Rim ben zina: president of the forum de la Mer-Bizerte (Blue Season)

The topics discussed during this 1h45 episode of  L’expert’ were :

  • The relationship between Blue Economy and the COP / what is the relationship between the two and what interests are there for small and developing countries.
  • Is Tunisia equipped to promote the blue economy, does it have traditions in this area and what are the economic sectors concerned
  • How can these  sectors contribute to increasing growth and employment in Tunisia and solve the problem of higher education graduates.
  • What are the impacts of the promotion of these sectors on the environment and should we take specific measures to protect the maritime and marine space and also the coast and avoid problems of development caused by conflicts of interest between operators.
  • Why are there delays in certain sectors and what are the solutions?
  • Is there a cooperation with other countries to promote the blue economy?
  • Is scientific research sufficiently developed in Tunisia to boost rapid growth.

La conférence se tiendra le jeudi 22 juin 2023 à Malte. L’événement est ouvert à toutes les parties prenantes qui contribuent à améliorer l’économie bleue durable dans la région.

Que vous soyez propriétaire d’une entreprise, un entrepreneur, un scientifique, un investisseur, un conférencier, une autorité locale ou régionale ou un décideur politique, cette journée est faite pour vous. Cette année, l’accent sera mis sur les quatre principaux domaines thématiques que l’initiative WestMED soutient activement : Aquaculture durable, Transport maritime et ports verts, Clusters maritimes et Aménagement de l’espace marin.

La conférence des parties prenantes sera suivie d’une réunion ministérielle officielle (sur invitation uniquement) le 23 juin. À cette occasion, les ministres des dix pays membres signeront une nouvelle déclaration ministérielle dans laquelle ils s’engagent à reconfirmer et à rationaliser les priorités pour stimuler l’économie bleue dans la région méditerranéenne.

Memorandum of Understanding signed between World Ocean Council and the UfM/WestMED to boost private sector engagement in the Mediterranean Blue Economy

On March 28,2023, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the World Ocean Council (WOC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the UfM Headquarters in Barcelona. This, within  the framework of the 2021 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Blue Economy and Roadmap for its implementation, and the WestMED Initiative, supported by the UfM and by the European Commission.

The MoU details key avenues of collaboration to promote cooperation, strong engagement, stewardship, and corporate responsibility from the business and investment communities in the maritime  sectors at Mediterranean level.

Cooperation will mainly focus on blue business development and entrepreneurship (incl. blue skills, careers, jobs and employability) and blue investments i..e the blue finance process in the Mediterranean. This via joint promotion and possible co-organisation of events, helping connect political to business apirations, exchanging expertise etc.

The WestMED Assistance Mechanism and the WOC are currenly exploring practical plans for joint development and cooperation in 2023.

Last year, over 600 EMD In My Country events took place all over Europe and beyond!

It is time to break a new record to celebrate our blue planet this year!

Any blue event between 1 April and 31st October 2023 can apply.

There is no limitation: from beach clean-ups to educational tours or seafood fairs, all events promoting sustainable ocean and blue economy are welcome.

As a token of our gratitude for your action, you will receive promotional material for the participants in your event, which will be featured on our website. Make sure you indicate the number of participants in your application to receive enough goodies.

presentation at salon halieutis

WestMED a partagé les opportunités de l’économie bleue avec le secteur de l’aquaculture et de la pêche au Salon Halieutis au Maroc.

La 6ème édition du Salon Halieutis a eu lieu à Agadir du 1er au 5 février. Il s’agit du plus grand événement international pour la pêche, l’aquaculture et la transformation des produits de la mer au Maroc.

Le mécanisme d’assistance WestMED, et en particulier les représentants du Hub WestMED du Maroc et de la Mauritanie, ont participé au Salon. Ils ont rencontré des visiteurs au stand européen et ont organisé un atelier sur les « opportunités de l’économie bleue au Maroc ».

M. Mohamed Yassine El Aroussi, coordinateur national marocain du WestMED au ministère de l’Agriculture, de la Pêche, des Affaires maritimes et du Développement rural, a souhaité la bienvenue aux participants de la session et a salué l’opportunité d’organiser l’événement WestMED en marge du Salon Halieutis, qui offre une plateforme précieuse aux experts pour se réunir et partager leurs connaissances et expériences.

Il a également souhaité la bienvenue au nouvel expert marocain, M. Lahbib Latrach, qui sera le centre d’expertise WestMED pour le Maroc. M. El Aroussi a assuré que le point focal marocain est prêt et engagé à travailler en étroite collaboration. Cette coopération devrait apporter de nouvelles et passionnantes opportunités pour le succès de l’initiative WestMED.

M. El Aroussi a également exprimé son grand plaisir d’accueillir l’équipe mauritanienne de WestMED et la valeur de cette participation, démontrant ainsi le fort engagement de la Mauritanie envers le développement et la croissance de l’économie bleue en Méditerranée occidentale.

M. Lahbib Latrach, a présenté le contexte de l’initiative WestMED, sa structure, sa mission, sa vision et le programme technique correspondant. Il a souligné l’importance d’impliquer toutes les parties prenantes, y compris les gouvernements, les institutions de recherche et d’enseignement, les organisations non gouvernementales ainsi que le secteur privé pour améliorer l’innovation, le renforcement des capacités, l’échange de connaissances afin de créer une alliance nationale qui renforce les secteurs de l’économie bleue. Son intervention s’est terminée par le partage des résultats de certains projets assistés, et des appels à financement disponibles pour les projets d’économie bleue.

Du centre national WestMED de Mauritanie, M. Mohamed Lemine Abdel Hamid a présenté une vue d’ensemble de l’initiative WestMED, les principaux projets, les opportunités de financement et les principales réalisations au cours des quatre dernières années. Il a également fait remarquer au cours de la session les priorités de la nouvelle coprésidence WestMED de la Mauritanie et de Malte pour 2023. Au niveau national, la Mauritanie a fixé des objectifs ambitieux en matière d’économie bleue, notamment la promotion de la pêche et de l’aquaculture durables, le développement d’un cluster maritime réunissant tous les acteurs de la mer, le développement du transport maritime et le développement de la planification de l’espace maritime (PEM).

Dans le cadre de l’initiative WestMED et avec le soutien de CINEA et de la DG MARE, la Communauté de pratique sur la planification de l’espace maritime (PEM) pour la Méditerranée a été lancée le 26 janvier lors de la réunion de lancement à Bruxelles. Mme Laila BENSMAIL, membre du comité directeur de WestMED et experte nationale en PEM, a présenté la Communauté de pratique au Salon Halieutis. L’objectif principal de la Communauté de Pratique MED-MSP est d’établir une communication permanente et un dialogue transfrontalier entre les experts de la PSM (c’est-à-dire les planificateurs, les experts techniques, les chercheurs), et d’échanger des connaissances et des expériences pertinentes dans la région, afin de parvenir à une perspective partagée sur des sujets d’intérêt commun sur la PSM et de renforcer la coopération entre le nord et le sud de la Méditerranée. Le développement de la PSM dans des pays comme le Maroc et la Mauritanie est l’une des principales priorités des gouvernements nationaux.

Ensuite, la Commission européenne (DG MARE) a présenté les appels à propositions en 2021 et 2022 relatifs aux projets phares sur l’économie bleue en Méditerranée occidentale. Le premier appel à propositions en 2021 visait à renforcer la compétitivité et la durabilité des secteurs du tourisme côtier et maritime en Méditerranée occidentale. Tandis que l’appel de 2022 s’est concentré sur deux nouveaux sujets : le transport maritime vert et les ports et clusters maritimes. A titre d’exemples de bonnes pratiques de projets financés par les appels de la FEMF, trois projets d’économie bleue ont été présentés au Salon : REBOOT MED – Recovering, Experiencing and Boosting eco-tourism in the WestMed, AFRIMED : Algal Forest Restoration In the MEDiterranean Sea et E-FishMed project : virtual academy on fisheries inspection and control.

Dans l’ensemble, l’atelier s’est avéré être une source d’inspiration pour les visiteurs et un bon endroit pour que le WestMED rencontre et interagisse avec ce secteur important et en pleine croissance.
