The National Hub Spain facilitates local and regional stakeholders by providing the WestMED Community with expertise on the Blue Economy, help project leaders find the right partners with their extensive network on both shores of the western Medietrranean, support project(idea) development, help draft tender applications and advise on the most applicable funding opportunities.
The National Hub (co)organises events to help lead discussions on different maritime topics and can be found at (online) Blue-Economy related meetings to share their expertise.

Dr Marta Pascual
Marta is currently a Senior Environmental Consultant at ECORYS Spain as the National Hub Spain for the Western Mediterranean initiative. She is former participant of the EU MSP Platform and has also been working as a Senior Associate Expert for the EU Commission and ECORYS in works related to MSP for Blue Growth and Blue Economy. She is a former Ikerbasque Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3, Spain).
She has 11 years of professional experience in the application and implementation of various European environmental and maritime directives such as the MSFD; MSPD; Habitats and Birds Directive, WFD.
Her experience in research include various lines of marine and coastal research applied to maritime environments such as: MSP; SEA; MSFD; EBA; Ecosystem Services Mapping/Modelling; ARIES (Artificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services Modelling); Socio-economic Assessment of MPAs; Value Chain Analysis; Spatial Prioritization Tools (Spatial Multi Criteria Analysis – SMCA, Marxan, INVEST); Land-Sea Interactions; Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM); Multi-Use Platforms; Climate Change Adaptation in Coastal Areas; Blue Carbon; Fiscal Mechanisms applied to Conservation; Biological Valuation (BV) and Ecosystem Services Valuation (ESV).
Irene Alonso
Irene Alonso, Junior Consultant at Ecorys, is an International Relations graduate specialised in EU public policy. She gained her bachelor’s from the Complutense University of Madrid and completed a 9 months exchange programme at the Political Studies Institute (Sciences Po) of Strasbourg, France. Later on, she graduated from a master’s programme with the University Menéndez Pelayo in International Cooperation and Public Policy.
Irene is currently a junior consultant at Ecorys working for the Madrid regional office. During her time at Ecorys, she has gained experience in delivering research, communications and stakeholder engagement consulting services to European Commission funded programmes, including the the Interreg MED governance project PANORAMED, the H2020 project “COME RES” and the WestMED Assistance Mechanism supported by DG MARE and CINEA. Furthermore, she has been involved in a study on the Blue Economy with a task to gather data on marine sustainability. P
reviously, she worked for two and a half years at the Permanent office for Europe of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), an international organisation attached to the Organisation of American States (OAS).
